Mrs. Tillinghast Funeral Held Here

Mrs. Jennie Tillinghast, who, had she lived until next Tuesday, would have been 93 years of age, died at the family home here, Saturday. Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon at 1:30 and at the Methodist church at 2:00 under direction of the Festenow Funeral Home. The services were conducted by Rev. Wm. W. Ross, pastor of the church.

Pall bearers were Olin Anderson, Connie Johnson, George Newcomb, Lee Reed, Frank Boatman and F. O. Plagman. Music was furnished by Mrs. Oral Anderson and Mrs. Roy A. Jarnagin with Mrs. James Brown at the piano. Interment was in the Oakland cemetery here.

Mrs. Jennie Tillinghast (nee Charlotte Jane Vauthrin) was born April 20, 1855 in La Harpe, Illinois, and at the age of six weeks was brought by her parents in a covered wagon to Story county, Iowa. The family later moved to Marshall county settling on a farm near Melbourne, where she lived until her marriage on December 12, 1881 to Sam Tillinghast. The following spring they came to Clay county and bought a farm near Peterson.

Four children were born to this union, Victor, Carl, Garth and Velma, all of whom preceded her in death except Velma, now Mrs. Carl Walrath. In the fall of 1917 Mr. and Mrs. Tillinghast moved to Peterson where Mr. Tillinghast died in March 1928. In recent years the daughter and her husband have made a home for Mrs. Tillinghast at the town residence and cared for her during her final illness. Beside the daughter, Mrs. Tillinghast is survived by four grandchildren, Wayne, Warner, Keith and Florence Walrath and five great grandchildren.

If she had lived until April 20 she would have rounded out 93 years on earth, living to see many changes from the oxen and covered wagon to the automobile and airplane. She was the last survivor of a family of 12 children. A member of the Methodist church since early girlhood, she was a worker in the O. E. S. and W. C. T. U. during her active years and always had the welfare of the community at heart.
