Phyllis Ann Abel was born June 30, 1937, in Red Wing, MN, daughter of Reuben and Lydia Voth.

Our gracious God bestowed upon Phyllis the gift of faith through the “washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit” when Reuben and Lydia brought her to God’s house where she was baptized ‘In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit’ on July 25, 1937 at St. John Lutheran Church in Red Wing, MN.

Phyllis was later instructed in the Evangelical Lutheran faith and was confirmed in this Confession on May 20, 1951, at St. John Lutheran Church, Goodhue, MN, promising to “suffer all, even death, rather than fall away from it.” Through the hearing of God’s Word and partaking of Christ’s body and blood in the Sacrament of the Altar, God kept Phyllis faithful to this Confession and promise and it was in this same faith that she died on Monday, December 2, 2019.

Phyllis married Martin Augustin on June 15, 1957. God blessed their lives together in many ways, especially through their three daughters: Sandra, Tamara, and Julie. Following Martin’s death, Phyllis was married to Kaylan Abel on November 18, 2006. God similarly blessed their years together.

Those who mourn Phyllis’ death include her immediate family: husband, Kaylan Abel and his children; daughters Sandra Strenecky and husband Stephen, Tamara Knox and husband Michael, Julie DenOuden and husband Ronn; grandchildren, Jennifer Knox, Philip Jimenez, Ben Jimenez, Jason Knox and wife Michaela, Jessica Knox, and Jamie Knox; great-grandchildren, Paisley Knox and Elias Knox; sister, Ruth Luhman and husband David; and numerous close relatives. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents and husband Martin.

Phyllis was a graduate of Goodhue High School in Goodhue, MN in 1955. Following high school, she was a bookkeeper for a freight line in Zumbrota, MN. After her marriage in 1957, she prioritized the care of her family. While living in Spencer she did clerical work for an insurance company, the Department of Health, and retired in 2007 as secretary at Christ the King Lutheran Church. She was active in church life by teaching Sunday school, was active in several women’s groups, and was the chairman of the Altar Guild at Christ The King for many years.

On Monday, December 2, 2019, the risen and ascended Lord Jesus called Phyllis forth from this vale of tears to bring her to the heavenly home which He has prepared for all who believe in Him.

Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write: ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors.” (Revelation 14:13a)
