May 27, 1844
July 19, 1922

Emanuel Boyer, aged a little more than seventy years and a Spencer resident for over forty years, died Wednesday, July 19, at the home of his son, Ed Boyer at Deer Lodge, Montana. Mr. Boyer's death followed an illness of several months. Following a custom which he has been following for a number of years, he went Biloxi, Mississippi, to escape the rigors of the severe Iowa winter. He was taken ill with an attack of Bright's disease and heart trouble and was confined to a hospital there. His son left from Deer Lodge and as soon as Mr. Boyer was able to be moved accompanied him to Montana. He grew gradually worse and the end came a week ago.

Emanuel Boyer was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Boyer and was born at York, Pennsylvania, May 27, 1844 and at the time of his death was a few months past seventy eight years old. At the age of thirteen he came with his parents to Indiana, settling near Bristol. Here he grew to manhood. He was married in 1865 to Miss Margaret Shanks and to this union three children were born, all of them sons. One died in infancy. The others were Charles and Ed Boyer. The former died in 1917 and is buried in Riverside. Mrs. Boyer died in 1915, her death being very sudden

Om 1984 Mr. Boyer enlisted in Co. E. Fifty Third Indiana Volunteer Infantry and served faithfully until the close of the war. He became a charter member of Annett Post No. 124 when it was established in Spencer and so merited the trust and confidence of his brother members that he was elected to every office in the organization

Mr. Boyer was also much interested in fraternal organizations. He was a member of Evening Shade Lodge No. 912 A.F.&A.M. and Odd Fellow for over fifty years. To all these orders he gave of his unfailing energy and skill and was ever ready to perform the duties fell in his lot as a member. He was a member of the M.E. Church and had been a faithful Christian worker in the Church during his entire life of forty years in this city

Mr. Boyer served the city of Spencer for number of years as a member of the City Council. He was also a director and treasurer of the Spencer Building and Loan Association, holding this office for a period of over ten years. And numerous Spencer and Clay county people will remember his faithful and kindly services during their hours of grief in the death of a loved one, for he was sexton of Riverside Cemetery for a great many years or until the work became too much for his falling health.

Besides the son, Ed Boyer and his wife, he is survived by one grandson. Noel Boyer, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Boyer. There is also one half brother, Frank Boyer of Sturgis, Michigan.

The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the M.E. Church, the body arriving here Saturday, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Ed Boyer and son, Noel. The service at the church was in charge of the Rev. Robert Lee Stuart, Pastor oth the Church. Music for the funeral was furnished by a male quartette composed of the Messrs. H.P. McKean, L.R. Bellows, G.B. Mountford and V.L.Laton. The various organization to which Mr. Boyer had belonged attended in bodies and the funeral was one of the largest held for a long time in this city. Pallbearers for the afternoon were close friends of Mr. Boyer; A.C. Perine, Homer E. Pitcher, F.J.O'Brien, H.H. Hoberg, R.W. Hanson and John Randolph

At the grave the funeral services were conducted under the auspices of the Masonic Order, according to the Masonic Ritual. Arthur E. Anderson acted as Worshipful Master and E.G. Morgan Jr., as Marshal. The service was conducted by A.H. Avery, Master of Ceremonies. Interment was made at Riverside
