J. S. Borland Funeral Is Held Here

James Sidney Borland, son of Andrew David and Rose Ann Borland, was born near Battle Creek, Michigan, on February 25th, 1858, and passed away at the home of his son D.S. Borland of Peterson, on May 23, 1951, being his 94th year.

He lived in Battle Creek until he was 7 years of age, when he, with his family, moved to Belle Plain, Iowa, by covered wagon train. Later he moved to Irvine, Iowa, where he received his education, and also worked with his father at the blacksmith trade.

Later on he moved to Hamilton County, Iowa, where he was united in marriage at Webster City to Miss Helene Wagner on March 7, 1883. To this union four children were born, three of whom survive. They are D.S. Borland, Mrs. Levi French of Peterson, and Mrs. Frank Steele of Sutherland.

In 1888 the family moved to Peterson township where they located on the farm now occupied by his son D.S. Borland. With the exception of ten years spent in Minnesota, he has made his home in this community since 1896. For most of the last thirty years he has made his home with his son on the old home place. His wife preceded him in death on April 3, 1909.

Mr. Borland was the last survivor of seven children. The Borland family were early members of the Peterson Methodist church.

There remain to mourn his passing, besides the three children, 13 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren, besides many neighbors and friends.

Mr. Borland was one of the early pioneer settlers of this community, and he helped make this section of the country what it is today.

Funeral services were held at the Fastenow Funeral Home and the Congregational church of Peterson on Friday, May 25th at 1:30 and 2 p.m. Burial was in the family lot in the Oakland Cemetery at Peterson, Rev. Ernest Stanworth was in charge of the services.

Pall bearers were Harold and Silas Steele of Sutherland, Lyle and Dale French and Walter Terrill of Peterson, and Wendell Borland of Lake Park, Iowa, grandsons of the deceased.

Mrs. Elsie Mae Brown and Byron Reed, with Mrs. Ralph Reed at the organ, rendered the musical selections.
