MRS. J.D. GASKINS

Kate Whittle was born near Monona, Clayton Co., Iowa, August 25th, 1865, where her early years were spent. She was christened in the German Lutheran church. In April 1891, she was united in marriage to J.D. Gaskins at Manchester, Iowa. For the following ten years, resided at LaPorte, Iowa. In February 1901 the family came to Peterson where she has since resided. The end came on the morning of October 12, 1922, when she was a little past 57 years of age. She became a member of the local Chapter of the Eastern Star in April 1913. She was a loyal and faithful member of the Congregational church, always anxious for its welfare and success. A thoroughly consecrated christian woman, charitable, generous and neighborly, the friends of all in need. She has joined that innumerable host, of whom John the revelator says, "They rest from their labors; and their works do follow them." Mrs. Gaskins leave to mourn her departure, her husband, two sons, Vernette and Cecil, one sister, a brother, and niece together with a host of friends and neighbors.

The funeral services were held in the Congregational church, on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 conducted by the pastor, Rev. Newton Moore. The text used was from St. Mark, 14:8 "She hath done what she could." These were the gracious words of the Master, and were spoken regarding the act of the woman who broke at his feet the box of precious ointment. The thought of the sermon was, that the departed friend and neighbor had, in her time and generation, done what she could for God and humanity.

Music was furnished by a quartette consisting of Mrs. C.H. Atkinson, Mr. Frank Steckmest and Mr. and Mrs. Andrew McIntosh. The pallbearers were Messrs. Stevens, Fulton, Whitney, Erickson, Tumler and Anderson. The services at the grave were in charge of the local Chapter of the Eastern Star, of which Mrs. Gaskins had for several years been a faithful member.
