Sam Gillespie Passes Away
Former County Treasurer and Old Resident Here Dies in the East
Word has been received by Spencer friends of the death of Samuel Gillespie, a former Clay county resident, at the home of his son, Leigh Gillespie, at Rochester, New York, on Saturday, May 8, 1926. He was 83 years, 3 months and 21 days old at the time of his death.
Samuel Gillespie was born January 17, 1843, at Lafayette, Indiana, where he lived until 1868, attending the greater part of his time in the schools of Lafayette and the Indiana State University at Bloomington. He also taught several terms of school in that state. In the spring of 1869 he went to California, where he remained two years, teaching. In 1871 he came to Clay county and located at Peterson, and purchased an interest in the Clay County News. He was elected superintendent of school in 1877 and again in 1879. Upon the expiration of his term of office he purchased an interest in S.S. Biksen's shoe store. He served as mayor of Spencer one term. In 1911 he became treasurer of Clay county and held that office four terms.
Soon after he retired from office Mr. Gillespie went to California where he spent several years. About four years ago he visited friends in Spencer. During recent years he has been making his home with his son, Leigh, at Rochester, New York.
In 1877 he was married to Miss Lizzie Goss, who died about ten years ago. He is survived by one son, Leigh.
