Elmer Triplett Is Killed

Elmer Triplett, aged 57 years, member of one of the best known of the pioneer families of this community was killed Saturday night while on his way home from the fair at Spencer. He was riding his motor-bike and was struck headon by Clarence Stefgen, of Linn Grove, when the latter went to pass another care on his way to Spencer. The accident happened about 4 1/2 miles south of Spencer on Highway 71.

Triplett, who received a concussion and compound fractures of the legs and wrist, died about 45 minutes after reaching the hospital.

Steffen, who with his wife and baby boy was on his way to Spencer, said he swung out to pass a car and suddenly saw a faint yellow light flickering in the road ahead of him. This he said, was the first he knew that any other vehicles were approaching. Triplett swerved his machine about the same time and the two vehicles met headon.

Triplett whose body flew over the top of Steffen's car had his right foot nearly severed apparently by the hood ornament on Steffen's car.

Highway patrolmen investigating the accident credited a Spencer man with giving first aid at the scene of the accident. Patrolman Doyle Derickson and Martin Grebe said Jim Cuthbert applied a tourniquet to Triplett's leg and stopped the bleeding until the ambulance arrived.

Elmer Clayton Triplett son of the late Myron and Mary Triplett was born August 22, 1894 at Peterson, Iowa and passed away at the Spencer hospital on September 15, 1951 at the age of 57 years and 24 days. Death came as the result of a highway accident south of Spencer.
