Thomas E. Powell the son of Theophilus P and Annie S. Powell was born on a farm near Mineral Point, Iowa County, Wisconsin on August 9, 1870. He died December 30, 1958.

When a boy of ten he moved with his family to Richardson County, Nebraska where his father rented a farm.

In 1881 his father came to Clay County, Iowa and bought a farm, mostly all prairie about two miles north of Linn Grove. The family lived on this farm after putting up all the buildings and breaking up the virgin sod, until January 1, 1893 when the family moved to Spencer, his father having been elected County Recorder. Mr. Powell served as deputy in three of the various offices of Clay County at various times.

For awhile he, in partnership with his father, was engaged in the grain and coal business at Linn Grove. After selling the business at Linn Grove he worked as a buyer for several elevator companies.

In 1907 he was appointed as Rural Mail Carrier in which capacity he served for 28 years.

He was married on July 5, 1924 to Hannah W. Evans who died on September 15, 1938.

Since retiring from the mail service in 1935 he had not engaged in any line of work as his health would not permit.

He is survived by his foster brother Roy B. Powell and his sister in law, Josephine R. Powell; one nephew, T. Maxwell Anderson of Tulsa, Oklahoma and a niece, Margaret Westing of Madison, Wisconsin and numerous cousins in different parts of the country.

Other relatives are two step sons; David I. Evans of Waterloo and G. Dewey Evans of Decover, Wyoming and one step daughter, Miriam Evans of Los Angeles, California.

He was a member of the Grace Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge.
