Henry D. Janes was born March 9, 1839, at Fort Wayne, Ind. One year later his parents moved to Janesville, Wis., where he grew to manhood and on October 23, 1859, was united in marriage with Miss Maria A. Coalwell, to which union were born five children: Charles E. of Grand View, Wash.; Fred of Steele, N.D.; Mrs. Nellie Pierce of Kingsley, Ia.; Thomas D. of Steele, N.D.; and Mrs. Nina M. Lawler of Langdon, Ia., all of whom except Charles were present at his bedside.

Mr. Janes also had three sisters and one brother and four half brothers, all of whom preceded him in death by many years. Two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Griggs and Mrs. Mary Pember, and his brother, DeForest Janes, and his mother, Mrs. Sarah Janes Drake, are at rest in Riverside cemetery. Henry Janes attained the greatest age of any of his line. He had fourteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.

In 1865 he went to Dodge Center, Minn., remaining there twelve years then went to Johnson Center, Wis., two years later he removed to Crawford county, Iowa, living there four years, from which place he came to the farm south of Dickens forty-two years ago, which was his home til passing away. His wife passing away in 1911. He was married to Mrs. Alice Clennon on September 4, 1919, who with the children, relatives and a host of friends are left to mourn their loss. Through his long life he was a lover of home, where his interests centered, though he was also interested in community, but being of a quiet disposition, took little active part in them. Converted over forty years ago, he took an active part in the founding of the Congregational church of Dickens, being for some time deacon in the same.

For some than a year a partial invalid in body, nevertheless his mind was concerned with the things about him till the last. After intense suffering he fell asleep on Wednesday, April 1, 1925, at the age of 86 years and 32 days.

Funeral services were held on Friday afternoon at two o'clock in the Congregational church in charge of Rev. Hammerle of Fostoria and the remains were laid to rest in the Dickens cemetery.

The following out of town friends attended the funeral, Mrs. Arthur Little, a niece, of Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Cobb and Miss Inez Cobb of Akron, Iowa; H.M. Pember, a nephew, of Rock Valley; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Janes, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Janes and Mr. and Mrs. James Campbell of Sibley; Mr. and Mrs. Will Klopenburg and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Jones of Everly.
