Robert (Bob) Porter, 85, Spencer, died Sunday, March 28, 1999.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church, Spencer with the Revs Kim Crummer and Dale Hodges officiating.

Casket Bearers; Geoffrey Eaton, Bart Kramer, Jowl Eilers, Corey Eaton, Blake Reding and Kevin Black.

Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Spencer.

Robert Crandall Porter, son of Roy and Mayme (Bennett) Porter, was born January 22, 1914, in Sioux City. He was raised on a farm south of Cedar Falls where he received his early education. He graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and received his master's degree in education from the University of Nebraska.

On August 22, 1938, he married LuAnne Stanley and they initially made their home in California.

Mr. Porter taught at the Iowa State Juvenile Home in Toledo and Rock Rapids. He was superintendent of schools in Harvard, Waterloo and Weeping Water, Nebraska. He left teaching and went to work for Farm Bureau in Onawa, Lake Mills and Algona. He was employed by C-D Farm Service, Clay County Rural Water and the Farmers Bank of Spencer, retiring in 1979.

In 1967, he instituted a program at the Farmers Bank to give a tree to each fifth grader in Clay County. To date approximately 9,200 tree saplings have been given.

Mr Porter was a past president and life member of Kiwanis and a charter member of Daybreak Kiwanis of Spencer. In 1992, he received the Jack Wedel Memorial Award for outstanding volunteer service. He served on the board Sunset Retirement Home, was a counselor for SCORE and worked with the RSVP program in the grade schools. He was the CFO for the Clay County Democrats, and in 1992, was the top fund raiser for the Fifth District Democrats. For 15 years, he was a Salvation Army volunteer in Spencer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John; a daughter, Pamela and an infant grandson, Brent Kramer.

Mr. Porter is survived by his wife, three daughters, Susan Eilers and her husband, Herb of Spencer, Vicki Kramer and her husband, Gary of Iowa Falls; and Trudy Eaton and her husband, Kirk of Hilton Head, South Carolina; six grandchildren, Geoffrey Eaton, Corey Eaton, Bart Kramer, Beth Kramer Reding and her husband, Blake, Jennifer Black and her husband, Kevin and Joel Eilers, three great-grandchildren, Kasey Black, Allison Black and Charles Reding, a brother Gordon Porter and his wife, Jean, two sisters, Jane Berninghanusen and her husband, William and Marjorie Peard and her husband, William and a sister -in-law, Kathleen Potter.

The Warner Funeral Home of Spencer was in charge of arrangements.
