MRS. ACKLEY HUBBARD DEAD

An Old Time Resident of Spencer Passed Away Last Friday

In any history of Clay county worthy of the name, Mrs. Ackley Hubbard will always occupy an honorable place and especially in the history of Spencer. Mr. Hubbard came to this vicinity in 1869. In the spring of 1872 Mrs. Hubbard came to this county.

Spencer was then a wild prairie. There was practically no town here, no churches and but few buildings.

Miss Martha Hunt was born near the town of Monasterevan, Ireland, January 1, 1843. With her family she came to America in 1849 and settled on a farm near Batavia, New York. In 1865 the family came to Butler county, Iowa, and in the spring of 1872 to Clay county, Iowa, taking a homestead twelve miles northeast of Spencer. Her father was Mark Hunt, well known to the older settlers of the county. On Christmas day, 1872, she was united in marriage to Ackely Hubbard, who was then engaged in business in Spencer, and the same day they came to town, and from that time until 1906 Spencer was their home, except for a short time when they moved to California, remaining there but a few months.

Mrs. Hubbard was brought up in the Episcopal faith, and had always been a faithful and devoted member of the church, and a true Christian lady.

She was active in all the social affairs of the city. In the early days our library was a private association, and Mrs. Hubbard was president of the association and for some time she was a trustee of the library after the city took charge of it. She was also one of the prominent ones in getting the donation from Andrew Carnegie for the library building here. Mrs. Hubbard was active in the Woman's Club work of Spencer, and we believe served that organization as its president. She was also efficient in the work of the Rebekah lodge of this place. She was active in all charitable work. The Hubbard home was always a center for social affairs of our city, and Mrs. Hubbard was always enlisted in the work for the betterment of the social and spiritual life of our city.

In 1906 this family left Spencer and moved to Sioux City where Mr. Hubbard was president of the First National Bank. In 1910 they left Sioux City and moved to Minneapolis where they now reside, and where she died Friday, February 16. Mrs. Hubbard had been in poor health for some time, and Friday morning she started down stairs, and slipped and fell part of the way, bringing on a shock that caused her death in a few minutes.

The body was brought to Spencer Saturday evening, and taken to the Dr. Crandall home. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the Episcopal church of Spencer, they church that Mrs. Hubbard had been one of the organizers, and an active member of for years. The services were conducted by Rev. Dr. Morrow, and the interment was in Riverside cemetery.

She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, three children, Alice, Florence and Henry, and one brother, Mark Hunt of Los Angeles, Cali., former surveyor of this county. George, the eldest child, in 1880, and was buried in Riverside cemetery. A host of friends here unite extending sympathy to the bereaved family.
