Greenville Farmer Dies After Wreck

The funeral services of Alva C. Firebaugh, 76 years old, long time resident of Greenville and vicinity, who died in a local hospital Saturday night of injuries received when he was struck by an automobile on the street of Greenville, were held Monday afternoon in the Cobb Funeral home here.

Burial was made in a Sioux Rapids cemetery.

Mr. Firebaugh was struck by a car driven by Eugene Overeen, 17, who resides northeast of Greenville.

According to reports to Sheriff Fred Erickson, Mr. Firebaugh was crossing the street a week ago Wednesday evening when knocked down by the car driven by Overeen. Three other youths were in the car with the boy, the sheriff learned.

Mr. Firebaugh was taken to a hospital here where it was found he sustained six fractured ribs, a crushed chest, a broken right leg and a broken wrist. He died Saturday evening.

No charges have been filed against the Overeen youth. Following reports the youth was driving the car without lights, Sheriff Fred Erickson investigated but found no one who could substantiate the reports.

The sheriff said members of the Firebaugh family indicated they were considering filing charges but Wednesday no information had been filed with the county attorney.

The youth was requested to return his driver's license.

Mr. Firebaugh was born near [unreadable]. His early life was spent in Indiana, then when [unreadable] years of age he moved with his parents to a farm near Danville, Ill.

He was united in marriage to Cynthia Mae Porter, Sept. 24, 1884. To this union were born six children, the youngest of whom, a son, died in infancy. Surviving children are Glen P. Firebaugh, of Gary, Ind., Moss A. Crawford of Potomac, Ill., and Mary B. McMillin, Nelle B. Martin and Ruth Albert of Danville, Ill., also Alberta Firebaugh Barglof of Sioux Rapids and Gene Firebaugh of Greenville, grandchildren who were reared in the home of their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Firebaugh.

There are seven other grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a number of nephews and nieces, two sisters also survive, Mrs. Emma Fairchild of Rembrandt and Mrs. Mary Smith of Champaign, Ill.

A mixed quartet composed of Mrs. Vete Adams, Mrs. Glen Mason, Kenneth Scott and Roy C. Birdsall sang.

Casket bearers were: Charles Pickering, Peter Dethlefsen, Jacob Mason, Vernon Wade, I.N. Kirby and E.E. Amick.

Members of the Masonic Lodge of Sioux Rapids attended in a body.
