FORMER SUPERVISOR HENRY POWELL DEAD

Funeral Held Sunday. Mr. Powell Had Large Acquaintance in County

Henry Hargust Powell was born on a farm in Linden township, Iowa county, Wisconsin, May 7, 1858, was united in marriage to Miss Victoria Batten June 3, 1879. To this union five children were born, all of whom are still living. They are, Elmore F., the Misses Clara and Stella and Parker McK., all of whom are at home, and Mrs. Hazel Cate of Rossie in this county. All were present at the funeral.

In the year 1887, Mr. Powell and family moved to Clay county, Iowa, settling on a quarter of unimproved land in section 36, in Peterson township. Here he soon became interested in the Shorthorn cattle business and by dint of good management and watchful care, he brought to its presence high standard excellence, one of the finest herds of pure blooded cattle in the west. The name of H.H. Powell & Sons being well known all over this and adjoining states as a sufficient guarantee for the quality of the stock advertised.

Mr. Powell was for years a member of the board of supervisors of Clay county. He was also a member of the M.E. church at Peterson.

A few years ago, he became conscious of a serious soreness in the lower lip, which in spite of treatment, became more and more malignant. He submitted finally to several very severe and delicate operations, at the hands of some of the ablest practitioners in the country, if not in the world, but to no avail, and notwithstanding this and the very tenderest of nursing, he succumbed May 21, dropping away peacefully as if in sleep. Interment was made in the Pioneer Cemetery in Douglas township, where his aged parents had been laid away some years before. The funeral took place May 23rd, conducted by the Rev. Batho, of the M.E. church at Peterson, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Osborn, pastor of the Baptist church. Mr. Batho spoke from the words, "In my Father's House are many mansions," John 14;2. This text had been selected by Mr. Powell himself. Although the weather was very inclement, rendering the roads almost impassable, a large number had assembled to pay their last tribute of respect to their departed friend and neighbor.

Mr. Powell was a man of very cheerful disposition. Was noted for his strict integrity, honesty and good judgment. Was a very benevolent and charitable turn of mind, and was liberal in his views above the average. He will be greatly missed in his community, where his long and useful residence of friends and admirers. The heartfelt sympathy of the community are extended to the family in this hour of deep affliction and sorrow.
