Nels Vestergaard, 84, one of Spencer's older residents, passed away Saturday evening, July 6, at his home on East Park street. A paralytic stroke, suffered a few days prior to his death, was the cause. He had been in failing health the past few years. Following the stroke on June 30 he was in a semiconscious state until his death, passing at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the residence at 1:30 o'clock and at two o'clock at the Bethany Lutheran church, Rev. K. Nyegaard, pastor, officiating. Interment was at Riverside cemetery.
Came Here in 1907
Nels Christian Christensen Vestergaard was born April 24, 1851 at Lonstrup, Denmark, the son of Christian C. Vestergaard. He was baptized and confirmed in the faith of the Lutheran church early in life and remained a true and faithful follower of Christ and the church throughout his days, being affiliated with the Bethany church since his residence in Spencer.
He was united in marriage with Kristina Jensen Vestergaard, March 7, 1872, and resided at Moorhead, Iowa, after coming to the United States in March 1891. They continued to resided there until 1907 when they moved to Spencer, which was their home until death claimed them. Mrs. Vestergaard passed away two years ago.
Surviving Relatives
Near relatives surviving to mourn the death of a beloved father and grandfather are his three children: Mrs. A.C. Johnson of Moorhead, Iowa; John Vestergaard of Spencer, and Andrew Vestergaard of Milford, and six grandchildren: Joseph Johnson of Rolfe, Moses Johnson of Hastings, Nebr., Lydia Sorensen and Dorothy Isaacson of Bradgate, Iowa, Helen Vestergaard of Chicago, and Adolph Vestergaard of Spencer.
There are also eight great grandchildren. A daughter, Mary, died March 1, 1916, at the age of 34 years.
The death of Nels Vestergaard was received with sorrow throughout this community where the deceased and his family possess a large number of friends and acquaintances.
