February 21, 1999LeRoy Arndt, 80, Dickens died Sunday, February 21, 1999 at the Verterans Administration Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Funeral services will be at 1:30p.m. today at Warner Chapel, Spencer, with the Rev. David Doraisingh officiating.
Casket Bearers; Don Storey, Dennie Storey, Denny Storey, Jamie Storey, Bernard Shirk and Dan Steffen.
Honorary Casket Bearers: Daryl Arndt, Rick Shirk, Gary Arndt, Roger Shirk, Denny Thomas and Danny Leslie.
Burial will be at Dickens Cemetery.
Military services will conducted by Dickens American Legion Post #194.
LeRoy Otto Arndt, the son of August and Gertrude (Williams) Arndt was born May 22, 1918 in Fairmont, Minnesota. He moved at an early age with his parents to the Dickens area and it was in the Clay County rural schools he received his education.
On April 11, 1941, he joined the U.S. Army and was awarded the American Defense Service Ribbon, the European-African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon and six Overseas Bars. He was also a German prisoner of war for 26 months. He was honorably discharged on August 31, 1945.
LeRoy married Charlotte Curry on February 14, 1946 in Dickens. Following their marriage, the couple continued to live in the Dickens area. LeRoy farmed and worked for Spencer Municipal Utilities for 36 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Dickens American Legion Post #194.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.
LeRoy is survived by his wife; a daughter, Carmaletta Nelson of Santa Rosa, California; a son, Micheal Arndt and his wife, Kathy, of Ankeny; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Viola Storey of Hartley and Bertha Johns of Spencer.
