Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Methodist church in Dickens for John G. Duncan of Dickens, Iowa, pioneer resident of Clay county, who died Saturday, July 4, 1931, at his home in Dickens at the age of 91 years, 2 months and 14 days. Death was caused by senility.
Rev. J.W. Petersen, pastor of the Methodist church of Dickens was in charge of the last rites, being assisted by Rev. W.O. Thompkins of Spencer and Rev. Ralph Jones of Dickens. Burial was made in the Riverside cemetery at Spencer.
John G. Duncan was born in Keosauqua, Van Buren county, Iowa, April 21, 1840. When he was 1 1/2 years of age, his father died and his mother took him and his sister to New Hampshire where he was united in marriage November 4, 1862, to Ellen H. Anderson, a union which lasted for 68 years and 8 months.
Ten children were born to this union. Four daughters, Winnie, Editghy, Aseneth and Lulu preceded Mr. Duncan in death. In 1871 Mr. and Mrs. Duncan and their family moved to Clay county where they have since made their home, in and near Dickens. At the age of 17 years, he united with the Congregational church and was a faithful church worker until his health failed him.
Those that mourn his passing besides his wife are his six children, C.G. Duncan of Central Point, Oregon, W.H. Duncan of Two Harbors, Minnesota, F.E. and A.C. Duncan of Dickens and Mrs. W.S. Somers, also of Dickens, with whom he resided at the time of his death. He also leaves 26 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren.
