Langdon, IowaDorothy Heick Sorenson was born on April 6, 1911 to J. Fred and Magdalena Heick on their farm northwest of Peterson. She was the youngest of five brothers and four sisters. She attended a one room schoolhouse north of Peterson through 8th grade and then Peterson High School for 6 months before moving to Spencer with her parents where she graduated from Spencer High School in 1928 where she prepared herself as a teacher. Graduating at 17 years, she was too young to become a teacher, so she worked at Graham's Department store in Spencer for a year before teaching one year in a one room schoolhouse east of Fostoria.
She married Glenn Sorenson on April 2, 1931 in Royal and they started farming northeast of Spencer in Meadow Township. In 1936 they bought a farm one mile east of the original farm and farmed there for 30 years. They were blessed with four children, Sally, Richard, Marilyn and Barbara. Following Glenn's death in 1965, Dorothy moved into Spencer in 1969 where she lived in the same duplex until 2006 when she moved to Northshire where she loved playing cards with her friends.
She was active as a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer since 1925 and also was a member of the Spencer Rebekah Lodge. She was also active many years while on the farm in the Do It Better Club of the Langdon branch of the Clay County Farm Bureau and with Meadow Busy Bees 4-H club.
Dorothy passed away at the Northshire Residence on Monday, September 28, 2009.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 5 brothers, Carl, John, Walter, Peter, Albert, and 4 sisters, Mary Schultz, Anna Klatt, Dagmar Reed, and Alma Frazier, her husband, Glenn and daughter, Barbara Atkins and her husband, Tom.
She is survived by her children: Sally Baschke and Jim of Spencer, Richard Sorenson and Mary of Monmouth, Oregon and Marilyn Baca and Bill of West Pueblo, Colorado. She was blessed with 8 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
