Shirley Joyce Essick was born to Harry Leo and Bertha (Allee) Essick on October 10, 1944 near Gillett Grove, Iowa. She passed away at the Sioux Care Center of Sioux Rapids and entered into the presence of the Lord on February 7, 2008 at the age of 63.

Shirley spent her childhood in the Webb community and moved to Lake Park, Iowa with her family and graduated from the Lake Park Community School in 1962. Following graduation she enrolled at Creighton University in Omaha where she played softball and basketball.

On December 6, 1967 she married Charles Robert Fritz at the First Baptist Church in Webb where she was a member. Bob and Shirley lived their entire married life in the Webb community. The couple was blessed with two sons: Robert Lee “Bob” and Alan Dean.

Shirley loved being in God’s great outdoors. One of her most enjoyable activities was coaching the Webb boys’ little league baseball team. She also loved working at Grandpa’s Barn near Gillett Grove and helping children learn to ride horses. Shirley loved to golf and fish and she took many children fishing and they always caught fish! Shirley was a school bus driver for the South Clay Community School for eighteen years. Many people in the Webb Community were recipients of her loving and caring ways. One could always count on her if a ride was needed to go to an appointment, or if in home health care was needed. Shirley was certainly a First Responder, which she was in actuality, for twenty years as a member of the Webb First Responders Unit.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, David Essick; and her in-laws Oliver and Gertrude Fritz.

Shirley is survived by her husband Charles Robert; sons: Robert of Webb; Alan and wife Lora of Arcadia, Iowa; brothers: Don Essick and wife Ellen of Gillett Grove, Iowa; Ken Essick and wife Deb of Webb; sisters: Lois Wilkinson and husband Robert of Chicago, Illinois; Betty Carlson and husband Richard of Spencer, Iowa; Mary Klatt and husband William of Linn Grove, Iowa; sisters-in-law: Shirley Essick of San Diego, California; Lois Gardner and husband David of Champaign, Illinois; brother-in-law: James Fritz of Port Townsend, Washington; as well as a large extended family and a host of many friends.
