Bernice R. Nelson, age 94, of Sioux Rapids, died Wednesday, January 24, 2007 at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 27, at 11:00 AM at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids.
Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery at Spencer.
Bernice Rosellia Reng was born June 22, 1912 in Sioux Rapids to Albert and Lena (Elsmo) Reng. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith as an infant at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids and confirmed her faith as youth at the same church. She attended grade school at Cornell and graduated from Sioux Rapids High School.
On March 7, 1936, Bernice was united in marriage to Irven Nelson in Spencer. Two sons, Gary Lee and Jimmy Irven, blessed their union.
Bernice was just nine years old when her mother died and she learned at an early age to care for others. She and Irven raised their family on the same farm which had been in the family for many years. Before Bernice moved to town, the farm was named a Century Farm. Bernice raised chickens and had fresh eggs. Her garden was large and she fed her family and friends from its bounty. She loved to cook and delighted in feeding anyone who happened to stop at her home. She was known especially for her delicious apple pie, but her homemade cookies with a tall, cold glass of milk was a favorite with her beloved grandchildren. To relax, Bernice enjoyed watching television.
She was a lifelong, faithful member of First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids and also a member of the Cornell Community Club.
Her heart was always with her family and she treasured the time she spent with them. In her later years, she delighted in being a grandmother and loved her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren fervently. Bernice will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Gary (Lee) Nelson of Sioux Rapids and Jimmy (Carolyn) of St. Paul, Minnesota; grandchildren: Randy (Grace) Nelson of Kenai, Alaska; Lori (Jeff) Edwardson of Spencer; Kevin Nelson of Anchorage, Alaska; James (Sonja) Nelson of Maple Grove, Minnesota; and Joshua Nelson of St. Paul, Minnesota; great-grandchildren: Brandon (Sarah), Ashlee, Rylee, Courtney, Alexandria, Ryan, Sara, Josh, Elise and Amanda; great-great-grandchildren: Sierra and Autumn; sister-in-law Gertrude Reng of Sioux Rapids; extended family and many friends.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Irven; two brothers, Art and Otto; and one infant brother.
Interment in Riverside cemetery
