DICKENS, Iowa, November 10 (Special to The News-Herald)--Harlow Bolton Varney of Malta, Montana, 79 years of age, former Spencer resident, died Saturday, October 29, 1931, death being caused by senility. Funeral services were held in Spencer Thursday of last week from the Cobb-Phelps Funeral Home and burial was made in the Riverside cemetery.
Harlow Bolton Varney, son of Asa Varney and Maranda Norton Varney, was born February 8, 1852, at Boltonsville, Washington county, Wisconsin, being the third son.
In the spring of 1878 he left his parental home in Wisconsin and resided at Spencer, Iowa, on a farm for two years. Then in the spring of 1880 he started west to the Black Hills, South Dakota. In the fall of that year he located at Billings, Montana, where he worked at the Galager Ranch at Judith Gap and other places. He owned a number of ranches at various times, the first being located around Mushells, and the second at the mouth of the Mushells river near Yellowstone Park, and finally the Missioura, which he finally sold.
In the year 1882 when they were slaughtering the buffalo in Montana, he killed his share and his biggest day was sixteen. At that time they were worth $3.00 a hide.
At the time of his death, Mr. Varney made his home at Malta, Montana, where Mrs. Fred Wilson and he were owners of a block. He also owned a ranch, a house in Malta, and several other properties.
Mr. Varney never married. He leaves to mourn his death his brother, Charles Varney of Dickens and five nieces and nephews. His parents and two brothers preceded him in death.
