Mrs. Emil Sebastian Dies in California Following Illness
Word was received in Spencer last week of the death of Mrs. Emil Sebastian, former Clay county resident, in Los Angeles, Calif., January 4, 1933, at the age of 71 years and 21 days, following an illness of nearly three and one-half years.
Funeral services were held in Los Angeles with Rev. E.E. Day of the Congregational church of Whittier officiating. The body was placed in a vault, to be brought to Spencer in March when a prayer service will be held for immediate friends and relatives. Burial will be made in Riverside cemetery.
Hulda Kautz was born in Germany, November 13, 1861. When a small child she came to America with her parents, crossing the Atlantic in a sailing vessel. The family made their home at Thiensville, Wis., where Hulda grew to womanhood.
She was confirmed in the German Lutheran church and attended that church many years. Later in life she was active in the Congregational church.
On February 12, 1882, she was united in marriage to Emil Sebastian at Milwaukee, Wis.
They moved to Peru, Ill., where they made their home on a farm for ten years. In the spring of 1892 they moved to Shell Rock, Ia., to remain there for five years, coming to Spencer in 1897 to the present Sebastian farm southwest of Spencer. In 1919 the couple took up residence at 406 North Kenmore avenue, Los Angeles, Calif.
On Febrary 12, 1932, Mr. and Mrs. Sebastian celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
To this union were born five children, Ida J., wife of E.B. Warren of Imperial, Calif., Pauline Lula, wife of Henry Kaus of Spencer, Emil W., who passed away March 5, 1932, Emily M. McCleary of Windom, Minn., and Arthur A. of Spencer.
Surviving to mourn her passing besides her four children, are her husband, one sister, Mrs. John E. Mueller of Thiensville, Wis., eight grandchildren, and many friends.

Sebastian Funeral Wednesday at 2:30
Friends of the late Mrs. Emil Sebastian will pay last tribute to her Wednesday afternoon of next week, April 12, at rites held at the Jones funeral chapel, beginning at 2:30 o'clock. The body of Mrs. Sebastian is expected to arrive in Spencer next Tuesday from California where she passed away early in January.
Rev. Benjamin J. Trickey, pastor of the First Congregational church, Spencer, will officiate, and interment will be in Riverside cemetery.
