Geo. McHugh, 74, Is Laid to Rest Tuesday
Well Known Spencer Resident Passes Away Friday
Death called last Friday, October 13, George E. McHugh, retired farmer and well known resident throughout the county. He had suffered from a lingering illness of a complication of diseases, and passed away at his home on East Second street. He was 74 years, 11 months and 11 days of age.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Cobb funeral home, officiated by Rev. B.J. Trickey, pastor of the Spencer Congregational church. Mr. and Mrs. J. Elliot Gould offered music during the service. The body was laid to rest in Riverside cemetery with Earl Bassett, R.W. Hanson, John Shaw, Sr., L.B. Peeso, John Elder and C.I. Ginger as casket bearers. The chapel service was preceded at 2:15 by a prayer service at the home.
Ohio Birthplace
George Eugene McHugh was born November 2, 1858, at Mt. Pleasant, Ohio, the son of James and Sarah Fowler McHugh. He spent his early life near Mt. Pleasant and when nine years of age moved with his parents to Heyworth, Ill. Christmas, December 25, 1889, he was united in marriage to Georgia Brown. To this union seven children were born, Porter A. and Mrs. Tressie Farnham of Spencer, Leonard E. of LaGrange, Ill., Howard J. of Hutchinson, Kan., Edith who lives in the parental home, and Vera and Doris who passed away in infancy.
Retired in 1919
The year following their marriage they came to Spencer where they made their home for a few months before moving onto their farm six miles northeast of the city. In 1902 he and his family moved to another farm three miles north and a mile east of Spencer. Here they lived until 1919 when they retired and moved to the present McHugh residence on East Second street.
Besides a wide circle of friends, Mr. McHugh leaves to mourn his death his wife and children, two brothers, William F. and Adelbert of Heyworth, Ill., two sisters, Mrs. Bell Chapman of Beverly, O., and Mrs. Mary Scott of Heyworth, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Delbert, Gerald, Robert, Anna Mae and James McHugh and Shirley and Rodney Farnham.
Prosperous Farmer
When a young man Mr. McHugh united with the Presbyterian church. Later in life upon coming to Spencer, he transferred his membership to the Congregational church of this city, where he was a loyal member until his death.
With the thoughts of his family and their happiness ever uppermost in his mind, Mr. McHugh was a cherished member of the family circle. An especial trait was his love for children, and they in turn found a warm spot in their hearts for his kind consideration of them.
Of an ambitious and honest nature, Mr. McHugh provided amply for his family, and they enjoyed the many pleasures made possible through his labor for them. He was considered one of the most successful farmers in Clay county.

Away from Spencer to attend the rites Monday were Adelbert McHugh of Heyworth, Mr. and Mrs. L.E. McHugh of LaGrange, Howard McHugh of Hutchinson, Kan., Mrs. Fred Brown and Mr. and Mrs. Guy Wright of Desoto, Ia., Mrs. Leonard Carter of Dickens, Mr. and Mrs. E. Parker, Miss Leta Parker, Mr. and Mrs. Porter Parker and Mr. and Mrs. Elsie Bigger of Ruthven.
