Charlotte Drake Verharen, 1845-1928

Mrs. Charlotte Verharen of Minneapolis, Minn., passed away in Spenver last Wednesday evening, Feburary 1, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harry Glover on west Fourth street. Mrs. Verharen had been ill for several weeks and her death was caused from a complication of diseases. She had been with her daughter, Mrs. Glover for about a month.

Charlotte Drake Verharen was born August 9, 1845 in Farmington, Ill. Her father was a pioneer minister who came with his bride from Massachusetts to Illinois in 1834. Mrs. Verharen was left an orphan at the age of ten and was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Lumery of Princeton, Ill. She taught school in Morrison, Ill., for several years and in June, 1871 was united in marriage to Frank T. Verharen. To this union were born four children, Earl who died in infancy, Mrs. Lena Glover of Spencer, Mrs. Lula Lavell and Arthur W. Verharen both of Minneapolis. For the past fifteen years Mrs. Verharen had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Lavell in Minneapolis. Her husband preceded her in death January 25, 1904.

Mrs. Verharen was united with the Presbyterian church before coming to Spencer. She was always a loyal and active worker. Her whole life was characterized by an exceptionally strong Christian faith, which was a source of inspiration to her family and the many friends who knew her. Her bright and kindly nature was always the center light in the homes where she so faithfully served to the last. Two daughters, one son, five grandchildren and a great many friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Harry Glover home on west Fourth street at 2 o'clock. Rev. Benj. Trickey, pastor of the Congregational church of Spencer officiated. Burial was made at Riverside cemetery, Spencer.
