PIONEER SPENCER BLACKSMITH DIES; RITES ON MONDAY
Andrew Pedersen Ran Shop Here for 55 Years
Andrew Pedersen, 71, blacksmith in Spencer for the past 55 years, died Friday afternoon at 3:10 o'clock at his home 41 South Main street, following an illness of about four years. Death was caused from pernicious anaemia.
Although not confined to his home, Mr. Pedersen's health had been failing for the past four years. With his wife, he returned to his home here Mar. 29, from California where they had spent the winter, and since his return had spent much of his time at home. He was bedfast two days prior to his death.
Funeral services were held Monday at 1:30 o'clock from the Cobb Funeral Chapel and 2 o'clock from the First Baptist church, in charge of Rev. G.R. Siemeus, pastor.
Special music was furnished by a male quartet composed of William Clifford, Rex Lindquist, C.T. McGinnis and Rev. Siemeus who sang "Going Down the Valley" and "Beautiful Land."
Burial was made in Riverside cemetery with T.E. Powell, A.H. Rhodes, C.J. Moats, O.C. Reiste, Andrew Anderson and Walter Elded acting as pall bearers.
Andrew Pedersen, son of Peter and Margaret (Nelson) Jorgensen, was born in Fenn, Denmark, Nov. 4, 1863, which place was his home until he was 19 years of age, at which time he departed for America, coming directly to Spencer.
Mr. Pedersen followed the trade of blacksmith and had been active in that work for almost 55 years.
At Spencer, Nov. 26, 1883, Mr. Pedersen was united in marriage to Hilda Johnson, who preceded him in death July 7, 1911. Nine children were born to this union, two girls and seven boys. On Nov. 18, 1915, he was united in marriage to Maggie Roberts, who died June 6, 1922 and Mar. 3, 1923, was married to Alma Jones, who with his children survive.
One son of Mr. Pedersen, Glen, was killed during the World War, the local American Legion being named after him. Glen Pedersen was the first Spencer boy to be hilled in action.
Other children who preceded him in death were Mrs. Mabel Kall of Spencer, Donald Pedersen who was electrocuted five years ago, Floyd Pedersen, whose death occurred in Iowa City and Richard who died in infancy.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Amanda VanTrump of Des Moines, three sons, Ivan Pedersen of Royal, Elmer Pedersen of Spencer and Roy Pedersen of Lynwood, Calif.
Also nine grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Hans Larson, Mrs. Andrew Anderson and Mrs. Carrie Nelson of Spencer, a brother, Peter Pedersen of Farmington, Minn., other relatives and friends.
