Donald Arthur Claus, the son of Herman and Anna (Dass) Claus, was born May 18, 1926 in Ocheyedan, Iowa. Don was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Ocheyedan. He attended Zion Parochial School and graduated from Ocheyedan High School. Following his schooling, he continued to live in Ocheyedan, where he worked at the DX Station and was assistant fire chief on the Fire Department.

Don married Alta Mae Hollander on June 24, 1956 in Hull, Iowa. Following their marriage, they lived in Sibley for 6 months, until moving to Spencer, Iowa in 1957. Throughout their marriage, he worked at Nielsen Tire for 10 years and Iowa Veneer for 8 years, until going to work as a machinist for Eaton Corporation for 17 years, until his retirement in June of 1991.

During his retirement, he worked for a period of time as a groundskeeper at North Lawn Memorial Park and Riverside Cemetery for the City of Spencer.

He was an active member of First English Lutheran Church in Spencer, where he served on several boards and was Sunday school Superintendent. Don enjoyed fishing, traveling and building on his home. Time spent with his children and grandchildren was a great joy for him.

Donald passed away at the Spencer Hospital in Spencer, Iowa on Friday, September 14, 2007 at the age of 81. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David on May 16, 1998; three brothers: Harold, Marvin and Erwin Claus; a sister, Phyllis Dilly.

He is survived by his wife, Alta of Spencer; two sons: Gregory Claus and his wife, Dr. Maria Locher-Claus of Gainesville, FL and Daniel Claus and his wife, Connie Woodall-Claus of Spencer, IA; a daughter, Lisa Claus of Sioux Falls, SD; a daughter-in-law, Debbie of Spencer; 7 grandchildren: Sam, Sophia, Ashley, Amber, Andrew, Phillip and Elizabeth; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Claus of Ocheyedan; other relatives and many friends.
