Spencer, IowaRuth Elizabeth Kaus, the daughter of Elmer and Carrie (Kessler) Nitzsche, was born April 5, 1918 in Spencer, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in the Langdon area, where she received her early education at Lake Center School and later graduated from Lake Center High School in 1936. Ruth worked for three years at the Fettes and Swallum Hospital in Spencer.
On February 1, 1940, Ruth married Kenneth Kaus at the home of her parents in rural Spencer. Ruth and Kenneth farmed in the Langdon community for many years. Ruth enjoyed many hobbies including working in her large vegetable and flower garden on the farm and sending cards and letters to family and friends.
She was an active member of the Langdon United Methodist Church and was a lifelong member of the Langdon UMW. Ruth was also a lifelong member of the Clay County Farm Bureau. The Clay County Fair was an important annual event in her life and she was an active member of the fair for many years, volunteering her time helping at several stands. She was also a lifelong member of the Langdon Progressive Club.
She moved to Northshire Residence in Spencer in August of 2001.
Ruth passed away at Northshire Residence in Spencer on Thursday, March 15, 2007 at the age of 88. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth on March 18, 1997; a brother, Floyd Nitzsche and a half sister, Lucille Downing.
She is survived by one son, David Kaus and his wife, Debra of Spencer, Iowa; two grandchildren: Molly Kaus of Scottsdale, AZ and Joe Kaus who is a student at Iowa State University; one sister, Dorothy Chamberlain of Spencer; a sister-in-law, Pauline Kaus of Charles City, IA; other relatives and many friends.
