Mabel Lois Matthews, the daughter of Russel H. and Jennie B. (Hamer) Glessner, was born February 13, 1911 in Sheldon, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Sheldon where she received her education, graduating from Sheldon High School in 1929. Following high school, she attended Sheldon Junior College for two years, Buena Vista College in Storm Lake for one year and finished her education graduating from Manchester College in North Manchester, Indiana with a BS degree in teaching in 1934. Following her schooling, she taught school for five years at Garfield Township Schools.

Mabel married Burrel Matthews on April 17, 1938, in Sheldon, Iowa. Following their marriage, she continued teaching at South Clay and Ruthven elementary schools from 1962 until her retirement in 1974. Throughout her married life, she lived in the Webb area where she farmed with her husband. She was a longtime member and organist at the United Methodist Church in Webb, Iowa. She was a 4-H leader throughout the years. Mabel enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and sharing the fruits of her labor, along with cooking and music.

Mabel passed away at the Spencer Hospital on July 5, 2006, at the age of 95. She was preceded in death by her parents; her parents-in-law; three brothers: Edgar, Galen and Claire Glessner; three sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Burrel residing at Riverview Terrace Assisted Living in Spencer; one daughter and her husband, Lola Lee and Richard Read of Lake Park, IA; one son and his wife, Burlin Howard and Alice Matthews of Spencer, IA; four grandchildren: Bruce and his wife, Pat Read of Muscatine, IA, Bryan and his wife, Nicolle Read of Milford, IA and Tyne and Ryne Matthews of Spencer; seven great-grandchildren: Laura and her husband, Dan Gerwing and Jennifer, Elizabeth, Alex, Peyton, Conner and Madison Read; one sister, Evelyn Mehl of Ora Valley, AZ; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Glessner of Lakewood, CO; numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
