Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M., Saturday, July 8, 2006, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer.

Martha Jean Gates, the daughter of Bruce and Edna (Weltz) Nolan, was born December 28, 1930, in Tyndall, IA. Shortly after her birth, her family moved to Sioux City, IA, where she attended school, graduating from Central High School.

Following graduation Martha was united in marriage to Kenneth Paul Gates on August 28, 1949, in Sioux City. They resided in Sioux City for a short time before moving to Denison, IA.

In 1962 they moved to Spencer and opened the Spencer Vet Supply. Martha continued to live in Spencer until a few years ago when she moved to Fillmore, IN to be closer to her son.

In her free time Martha enjoyed bowling, playing cards, camping, fishing, canning, and gardening. Family was most important in Martha's life. She especially loved being around her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Martha was a member of the Evening Shade Chapter No. 116 O.E.S. Eastern Star.

On July 3, 2006, Martha passed away at her home in Fillmore, IN at the age of 75. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenny Gates; her parents, Bruce and Edna Nolan; and sister, Wynona Campbell.

Left to cherish her memory are her two sons: Denny Gates, of Fillmore, IN; and Greg Gates and wife, Mary, of Iowa City, IA; three daughters: Christine Johnson and husband, Tom, of Escanaba, MI, Sue Harman and husband, Dennis, of Spencer, IA, and Diane McMillan of Fillmore, IN; one brother, Kenny Nolan, of Sioux City, IA; two sisters: Judy Silver, of Topeka, KS; and Loretta Cook, of Pensacola, FL; 23 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
