Early Herdland Settlers

In 1882, Mr. and Mrs. Slupe moved to Herdland township, Clay county, being among the first settlers in that township. One of their neighbors was Frank Merriam, now governor of the state of California, who had a farm across the field. They resided here until 1901 when they moved to a place in Garfield township, residing on this place following his retirement 20 years ago.

Mr. Slupe was active in community affairs, being school director and doing other work of a public nature. In 1929 they established their residence in Spencer. Mrs. Slupe died June 6,1931.

Surviving are five children, Mrs. Ella Vogt, Bemidji, Minn.; Mrs. Reta Templeman, International Falls, Minn.; Frank C. Slupe, Beulah, N. D.; William E. and Fred Slupe, who resided with their father at the East Park street home. There are 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

A member of the Presbyterian church at Butler, Penn., Mr. Slupe later united with the West Branch Presbyterian church.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Christian church at two o'clock, preceded by a prayer service at the home at 1:30 o'clock. Rev. Forrest L. Richeson, pastor officiated. Mrs. J. Elliott Gould and Mrs. S. R. Axe sang two hymns as duets, "He Leadeth Me," and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." Mr. Gould accompanied.
