Ardis Mae Heien, the daughter of George Raymond and Flossie Alice Nelson Gerking, was born September 21, 1929, in Sloan, IA. Her childhood years were spent in Sloan where she received her education in country schools. Her family later moved to Onawa, IA, where she continued her education, graduating from Onawa High School. Ardis attended a Beauty School in Sioux City, IA, and became a licensed beautician. She moved to Spirit Lake, IA, in 1948.

Ardis married John Howard Heien on October 2, 1948, in Jackson, MN. Following their marriage, she continued her work as a beautician and later worked at Montgomery Wards until her retirement in 1984. She was an active member of First English Lutheran Church in Spencer where she was also a choir member. Ardis was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary and the VFW. In her spare time, Ardis enjoyed gardening, volunteer work and helping others.

Ardis passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Sunday, December 28, 2008, at the age of 79. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister, Dorothy and son-in-law, Mike Conley.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, John of Spencer; one daughter, Denise Conley of Spencer; one son, Marc Heien and his wife, Connie of Spencer; one grandchild;, Benjamin Heien of Spencer; one sister, Audrey Alfredson and her husband, Vernon of Sloan, IA; a brother-in-law, Dennis Heien of Hartley, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.
