Mrs. Emma B. Bassett, aged eighty-six years, two months and thirteen days, died last Saturday morning, March 27, at her home on West Fourth street. Mrs. Bassett had been in failing health for the past two months.
Funeral services were held at the Cobb Funeral Home on Monday afternoon, Rev. B.J. Trickey being charge. Mrs. L.R. Gartland sang a beautiful solo, accompanied by Mrs. R.M. Tuttle. Interment was made in Riverside cemetery. The pall bearers were Messrs. R.S. LaBrandt, L.R. Graham, Carl Culver, Ralph Free, W.W. Haygarth and George Bailey.
Emma B. Vaughn was born January 14, 1840 at Ticonderoga, New York, being the fifth child of a family of nine children. She grew to womanhood in the state of New York and was married August 11, 1867 to George E. Bassett, the wedding taking place at Pittsford, Vermont. Soon after this Mr. Bassett came west, living for a time in eastern Iowa. Later he came to Clay county, building a home on the homestead in Freeman township. Mrs. Bassett joined him here and shared with him the hardships as well as the pleasures pertaining to pioneer life. By their work, their ambition and unfailing energy they were able to convert the humble home of the prairie into one of the comfortable and most commodious homes in their neighborhood. They sold this homestead in 1892 and moved to Spencer, making this their home for about two years, after which they moved to the farm in Meadow township where for fourteen years they were active in every project of progress in that vicinity. The friends and neighbors of Mrs. Bassett came to depend upon her in times of illness and distress in their homes, knowing that their calls upon her for help in times of trouble would always be answered.
Mr. and Mrs. Bassett moved to Spencer again in 1906 and on August 20, 1907 Mr. Bassett passed away. After his death Mrs. Bassett continued to make her home here in Spencer. She was an active member of the Congregational church of Spencer.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Asa Ford of Wadena, Minnesota, and by one son, Earl R. Bassett of Meadow township. There are also nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. The grandchildren are Roy W. Ford of Jackson, Minnesota, Mrs. Beulah Ford Owen, Spencer, Glen A. Ford, Spencer, Keith W., John G., and Elwin D., LaVerna, and LaVina Ford of Wadena, Minnesota, and Dorothy Bassett of Spencer. The great grandchild is Roy Wendel Ford, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Ford. One sister and one brother, Mrs. George Best and George Vaughn are still living at Putnam, New York. Besides these relatives she leaves a large circle of friends.
