Marie Peterson, the daughter of George and Flossie Bell (Faulkner) Franklin, was born September 7, 1909 in LeMars, IA. Her childhood years were spent in Spencer, where she received her education, graduating from Spencer High School. After graduation, she attended the Thompson School of Beauty in Des Moines, IA.
Marie married Thornton S. Penn on July 20, 1929 in Adel, IA. Following their marriage, they lived in Des Moines for 20 years, in Minnesota and later back in Spencer, IA. Following her husband's death in December of 1958, she attended Northwest Institute of Medical Technology in Minneapolis. Following her schooling, she worked in hospitals in Storm Lake, IA and Albion, NE, as a Lab and X-Ray Technician for 7 years. She married Reuben Peterson on June 18, 1965 in St. Edward, NE, where they made their home on a farm from 1961 until 1984, when Reuben passed away.
In 1985, she moved back to Spencer, where she continued to make her home. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Spencer. She was also a volunteer at the Senior Center, a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, and was on the Meals on Wheels Board.
Marie passed away at St. Luke's Lutheran Home on March 23, 2010 at the age of 100. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Mark, and a brother-in-law, Gerald Lundquist.
Left to cherish her memory are one son, John Franklin Penn and his wife, Joan of Lincoln, NE; a daughter-in-law, Jean Penn of Minneapolis, MN; 9 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Lundquist of Spencer, IA; other relatives and friends.
