Eliza E. Claypool was born in Ireland November 21, 1847. In 1849 she came to America with her parents who settled near Scales Mound, Illinois. When a girl, she became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. September 13, 1865 she was married to William W. Claypool, shortly after his return from a four year service in the Civil war. In 1867 they moved to Hampton, Iowa, where they resided until 1882, when they came to Spencer, Iowa.

These people were in a sense pioneers for although the country was at that time fairly well settled both farms on which they lived at Hampton and Spencer respectively, were unbroken prairie land when first bought by Mr. Claypool. Thus in helping develop a new country and in her loyal, eager support of everything educational did Mrs. Claypool serve her country. Since her husband's death in 1913 she has lived in Sioux City where she died at her home in Morningside, April 16, 1917. She is survived by three children, Florence M. and Jennie L. Claypool of Sioux City, Charles A. Claypool of Fort Dodge; two grandchildren, Agnes G. and Kioth William Claypool of Fort Dodge. One brother, A.J. Livingston and two sisters, Mrs. H. Thurier and Mrs. E.L. Claypool, all of Spencer.
