Jesse M. Barnes died at the Spencer hospital Wednesday morning, July 20, at two o'clock at the age of forty-nine years, two months and seven days. He suffered a paralytic stroke on Saturday morning at 11 o'clock and was rushed at once to the Spencer hospital, where the best of care was given him. He never regained consciousness.
Jesse M. Barnes was born may 13, 1878 at Oreana, Macon county, Illinois. On Christmas day in 1900 he was married to Miss Mary Elizabeth Hilbrant of Argent, Illinois. To this union four children were born, Frances, who died in infancy, Esther Matilda, Russell Hilbrant, and Geneva Lucille.
Mr. and Mrs. Barnes moved to Iowa in the spring of 1909, residing in Sac county for nine years. After that they lived for a time southeast of Spencer and then moved to the present home one mile west of Spencer.
Mr. Barnes passed away just nineteen months to the day after the death of his father. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Barnes; three children, Mrs. Esther Uren, Russell and Geneva Barnes; his mother, Mrs. Katherine Barnes; and one sister, Mrs. Lenora McConnell, and other relatives and a large circle of friends.
Funeral services were held at the home a mile west of Spencer Saturday at three o'clock. The services were conducted by Rev. Herbert Clegg, pastor of the Methodist church, assisted by Rev. W.O. Tompkins. Interment was made in Riverside cemetery.
Those who came from a distance to attend the funeral were: his mother, Mrs. L.P. Barnes of Decatur, Ill., Mrs. Lenora McConnell of Argenta, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Hilbrant of Champaign, Ill., C.G. Hilbrant of Argenta, Ill., H.E. Hilbrant of New London, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. E.G. Hatch and their daughter, Ella Mae of Nemaha, Iowa, and a large number of friends from Sac county.
