Vera Herweg, 84, Carroll died at Carroll Health Center on Wednesday, June 26, 1996.

Funeral services will be Saturday, June 29, at 10:30 a.m. aat the First United Methodist Church, Carroll, with the Rev. David Clark officiating.

Casket Bearers; Norm Hutchinson, Bud Hutchinson, Tom Bennett, Tom Wachter, Mike Colburn, Bob Bowker, Louie Glass and Larry Munger.

Burial will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Evergreen Cemetery in rural Spencer with the Rev. Leon G. Triggs officiating

Vera Alice (Wallis) (Bennett) Herweg was born on November 20, 1911 in Stanley, Durham County, England, the daughter of Alfonso and Emma Wallis. She came with her parents to the United States in 1913. They located in Colfax where she received her early education. Following her father's death, her family moved to Garvin, Minnesota where she finished her high school education.

She moved with her first husband, Everett Lloyd Bennett to Greenville in 1933. Following his death, she moved to Spencer where she began a career in nursing.

In 1953, she married Jack Herweg in Storm Lake. They made their home in Carroll.

Mrs. Herweg's nursing education and experience came from enrolling in numerous nursing seminars and taking courses in local nursing homes in Spencer. She was the twelfth women in Iowa to take and pass the State Board to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked for hospitals in Spencer, Algona, Storm Lake and Carroll.

In 1965, she was elected president of the Iowa Office of the National Federation of Licensed Practical Nurses where she served four years and then was elected President of the National Federation of LPN's from 1969 to 1971. She received many honors and awards during her nursing career.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Signet Chapter #1 Order of the Eastern Star in Carroll.

Mrs. Herweg was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands one grandchild.

She is survived by two sons, Wilbur D. (Pete) Bennett and his wife Carlyn of Sioux City and Dean Herweg and his wife, Donna of Brewer, Maine; two daughters, Lillian (Bennett) Colburn and hr husband, Jay of Plano, Texas and Janice (Herweg) Wachter of Iowa City; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Evelyn Truelsen of West Bend, and Mary Munger and her husband Robert of Algona

Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Homes of Carroll is in charge arrangements.
