December 1, 1908-Sepember 13, 1990Services for Merle George Heikens, 81, of Spencer, will be 1:30 p.m., Wednesday at First Reformed Church in rural Everly. The Rev. Steven Hyma will officiate.
Casket Bearers; Mike Heikens, Justin Heikens, John Weiskircher, Doug Heikens, Edward Heikens and Lindell Peterson
Honorary Casket Bearers; Kenneth Nattress, Bernard Heikens, Earl Webster, Everett Hedge, Clarence Nattress, Marion Daughtery and Harm Meyer
Burial will be in Summit Township Cemetery, rural Spencer.
Mr. Heikens died Sunday, September 13, at his home in Spencer.
He was born December 1, 1908 in Ackley to William and Martha (Thompson) Heikens. His family moved to the Spencer area when he was two years old, settling in Summit Township. He received his early education in the country schools and later attended Spencer High School. Following high school, he began farming with his father.
On September 29, 1934, he married Gertie E. Eeten near Spencer. Throughout their marriage, they lived in Summit Township, where Mr. Heikens farmed until retiring in the early 1970's. Although he retired, he remained on the farm and was a member of the First Reformed Church near Everly.
He was preceded in death by his wife, one grandson, his parents, three brothers and four sisters.
Mr. Heikens is survived by one son and his wife, Marvin and Effie of Spencer; two daughters and their husbands, Marilyn and William Wilson of Northglenn, Colorado, and Janet and George Moriarty of Spencer; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.
