December 25, 1920-August 21, 1993Funeral services for Dale James Heikens, 72, of rural Spencer, were held at the Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer on Tuesday, August 24, 1993. The Rev. Larry McAlphine officiated the services.
Casket Bearers; Bernard Hoffrichter, Henry Sonius, Roger Simpson, Dale Schmidt, Pete Eeten and Dave Simington
Military services were offered by Glen Pedersen Post #1, American Legion of Spencer.
Dale James Heikens, the son of George D. and Lyle (Johnson)Heikens, was born December 25, 1920 in Clay County. He received his early education in country schools near Spencer and later graduated from Okoboji Consolidated High School west of Milford. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served during World War II, both overseas and in the United States, until his honorable discharge in 1945.
Dale married Virginia Miller on February 5, 1950 in Clay County. Throughout their married life, they farmed in Clay County. During his farming years, innovative ways to address everyday farming challenges were an instrumental part of his life. His mechanical abilities resulted in a patented invention of the hydraulic life for the mounted corn picker. He was a member of the Zion United Methodist Church in rural Everly and was also a member of the American Legion and the VFW in Spencer. Throughout his life, Dale was very active in his church, his community and with his family.
Mr. Heikens passed away at the Spencer Municipal Hospital on Saturday, August 21,1993. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Bernard. He is survived by his wife, Virginia of rural Spencer; one daughter, Joan Heikens of Norfolk, Virginia; one brother, Donald of rural Spencer; one sister, Mary Knight of Wahpeton; several nieces and nephews; other relative and many friends.
Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery in rural Spencer.
Arrangements were made by Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
