Steffen Mertens Dies At Age 77

Came Here From Germany When West Was A New Country

Steffen Henrich Mertens was born January 22, 1852 at Weener, Octfriesland, Germany. On April 10, 1881 he was united in marriage to Miss Jeitje Arman. Shortly after their marriage they left for America and came to Steamboat Rock, Iowa, where they resided until 1885, when they moved to a farm near Everly, Iowa.

In 1894 they moved to their farm in Dickinson County, where the family have resided since that time. After a lingering illness of about two years. Mr. Mertens was called to rest, on Thursday, September 5, 1929 at the age of 77 years, 8 months and 14 days.

To this union eight children were born, one son passing away in infancy. He leaves to mourn his departure seven children, two sons and five daughters. They are Mrs. Katy Hoiseth, Crookston, Minnesota; Mrs. Nannie Foster, Gilford, Montana; Mrs. Minnie Danielson, Donaldson, Minnesota; Mrs. Mary Krukow, Spencer; Johan Mertens, Milford; Mrs. Alice Johnson, Milford; Henry Mertens, Lake Park. Also 27 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. One brother and two sisters residing in Germany.

Funeral services were held at the Reformed Church at 2 p.m., Monday, September 9 with Rev. Kampman in charge and burial was made in the cemetery close by their church.

Pallbearers; E.E. Bleeker, D.E. Beving, Dick Janssen, H.H. Winterboer, John Ringering and S.W. Meyer.
