Mrs. Mary Mertens Passed Away Sunday At Milford Home

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon in the Reformed Church near Everly for Mrs. Henry Mertens, familiarly known as "Grandma" Mertens of Milford, who passed away at her home Sunday morning at the age of 78.

Jantje Amman was born April 5, 1862, in Nandorp, Germany. On April 10, 1881, she was married to Henry Mertens and the same year they came to America, making their home at Steamboat Rock, Iowa. They resided there until 1886 when they moved to a farm near Everly. In 1894 they came to Okoboji township where they have since been residents. Mr. Mertens preceded her in death 10 years ago. They were the parents of eight children, one of whom died in infancy. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Marenus Johnson of Milford, Mrs. Katie Hoiseth of Crookston, Minnesota, Mrs. Nannie Foster of Gilford, Montana, Mrs. Minnie Danielson of Euclid, Minnesota and Mrs. Mary Krukow of Ruthven, and two sons, John of Milford and Henry of Lake Park. There are also 39 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers; D.E. Beving, John Ringering, E.E. Bleeker, H.W. Meyers, Martin Roskens and George Roskens.

Burial was in the Reformed Cemetery near Everly
