Virgil Laverne Fliss
October 8, 1926-June 12, 1986

Funeral services for Virgil Laverne Fliss, 59, of rural Everly, were held on Monday, June 16, 1986 at the First Reformed Church in Everly with the Rev. Steve Hyma officiating. Virgil died on Thursday, June 12, 1986 at the Spencer Municipal Hospital.

Casket Bearers; Phil Blok, Carl Selzer, Ray Kaiser, Donald Nielsen, Clarence Birchard and Ray VanderBroek. Interment was in the First Reformed Cemetery in Everly.

Virgil Laverne Fliss, the son of Floyd and Myrtle (Case) Fliss, was born October 8, 1926, near Milford, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Dickinson and Clay Counties, where he received his early education. He graduated from Milford High School in 1944.

Virgil married Lois Winterboer in Everly, on August 5, 1948. Throughout their marriage, the Everly community was their home, where Virgil farmed for many years. On July 1, 1976, Virgil took the job as rural mail carrier out of Everly, in addition to farming the home place.

Virgil was a longtime member of the First Reformed Church near Everly, where he served in many capacities. He also had served as both a Farm Bureau director and school board director.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Lois; two daughters; Mary Lee and her husband, Dr. Dennis Somers of Marshall, Minnesota, and Cindy Jane Fliss of Everly; two sons; Keith of Everly and Gene and his wife Susan, also of Everly; four grandchildren; Douglas and Angela Somers and Kristina and Thomas Fliss; his mother, Mrs. Myrtle Fliss of Okoboji; one brother, Verlyn fliss of Everly; four sisters; Mrs. Gale (Muriel) Allen of Storm Lake, Iowa, Mrs. Henry (Marjorie) Mertens of Easton, Minnesota; Mrs. Ralph (Lois) Wichmann of May City, Iowa and Mrs. Hap (Charlotte) Thorne of Moneta, Iowa; other relatives and friends.
