John Paton, whose illness has been mentioned by The News from time to time, passed to his reward late Sunday evening. Short funeral services were held at the home Tuesday at 1 o'clock and public services conducted by Rev. O. M. Bond, were held at the M. E. church at 2 p. m. The funeral services were in charge of Annett post, of which deceased was a member. The post attended the services in a body, both at the home and at the church, and at the latter place, after the sermon, held the G. A. R. ritual services, following the remains of their fallen comrade to his last resting place in Riverside.

John Paton was born at Loma, Ireland, March 1, 1828, and was 83 years, 6 months and 4 days old when the death messenger came. When a very small boy he went to Scotland, where he lived until 21 years old, when he came to America, settling in the state of New York. In 1862 he was married to Nancy Breckenridge to which union there were born two sons and five daughters, all of whom survive him.

January 4, 1864, he enlisted in the Sixth New York heavy artillery, from which he was discharged January 22, 1865, on account of terrible wounds on his right arm.

In 1879 he came to Spencer, where he continued to reside till called away by death. During the long years of his residence among us he established a reputation for uprightness, integrity, and the qualities of true manhood, and he had the confidence and good will of all who knew him. For forty years he was an active member of the M. E. church, and lived up to the standard he professed. He was a loyal soldier and a loyal citizen.
