Donald Joseph Burns
October 2, 1917-April 15, 1980Services for Donald Joseph Burns, 62, of Hartley and formerly of Everly, will be 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Everly. Graveside military services will be conducted by Arthur Kirchoff Post No. 188 of the American Legion of Hartley. Interment will be at the Lone Tree Cemetery in Everly. Father Thomas Munn will officiate the services.
Pallbearers; Ed Jackson, Rudy Drath, Ervin Meisheid, Don Treimer, Delbert Peterson and CArl Winterboer.
Honorary Pallbearers; Bob Cuttell, Fred Adrian, Gale Birdsall, Bob Webb, Bill Thiessen and Cliff Dehrkoop.
Donald Burns, the son of Thomas and Cecil (Beacom) Burns, was born October 2, 1917 in Sheldon, He received his education in Sheldon and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He entered the service in June, 1942 and served as Master Sergeant with 133rd Engineers. He was overseas between April, 1944 to October, 1945 and participated in Normandy, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. He was awarded a Bronze Star and got his Honorable Discharge on November 4, 1945.
Donald Burns married Violet Kamphuis on January 5, 1952 in Sanborn. They farmed north of Everly for 25 years and have lived in Hartley for the past three years. He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Everly.
Donald Burns died Tuesday, April 15, at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Surviving are his widow, Violet of Hartley; three daughters and their husbands, MaryAnn and Duane Miller Jr. of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Patricia and Jim Webb of Rapid City, South Dakota and Janet and Louie Dehrkoop of Everly; two brothers, Robert of Hartley and Earl of Marshalltown; one sister, Mrs. Mary Negus of Hartley.
Baumgarten Funeral Home is in charge of the service arrangements.
