Resident of Clay County for Over 40 Years Passes Away in SpencerJohn Antone Berenger, resident of Clay County for more than forty years and city weigh master in Spencer for four years, died suddenly at his home, 270 East Third Street, Spencer, Saturday afternoon, March 9, 1929. The cause of his death was cerebral hemorrhage. At the time of his death he was 73 years, 6 months and 27 days.
Funeral services were held Monday morning of this week at the Sacred Heart Church of Spencer at ten o'clock with the Rev. Father M.C. Wendl officiating.
Pallbearers; Thomas Lacey, Charles Wagner, Thomas E. McKinstry, J. Hines, Hugh Smith and Philip Sakman, Burial was made in the Lone Tree Cemetery at Everly.
Born at Geneva, Switzerland on August 12, 1855, Mr. Berenger remained the old country until he was seventeen years of age when he came to America to make his home. He was one of four children born to John and Margaret Berenger of Geneva, the two sisters and one brother having preceded him in death.
After coming to the United States he located in Iroquois County, Illinois, until in 1883 when he removed to O'Brien county. On January 17 of the same year he was united in marriage to Miss Harriett LeClair. To this union six children were born, namely; Margaret, who died in infancy, John Berenger, who was killed in a motorcyle accident on May 18, 1914, Arthur Berenger of Royal, Iowa, Henry Berenger of Detroit, Michigan, Mrs. T.A. Teasdale of Annaheim, California, and Miss Lorraine Berenger of Spencer.
Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Berenger continued to make their home in Hartley for one year and then they moved to Everly where they lived until 1914. While residing at Everly, Mr. Berenger was employed in the Hunting Elevator.
In 1914 the family moved to Greenville and Mr. Berenger operated a general merchandise store. In 1920 the family came to Spencer which had since been his home. For four years Mr. Berenger acted as weigh master at the East Fourth Street City Scales Office.
He is survived by his wife and two daughters and two sons, fifteen grandchildren, other relatives in Switzerland and a host of friends in the communities wherein he had made his home.
Mr. Berenger was reared in the Catholic faith. He was a courteous gentleman of kindly spirit and generous disposition and faithful to every trust.
Among those from out of town in attendance at the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. George LeClair of Rosholt, South Dakota, Alphonse Mayhew of Bridgewater, South Dakota and Mr, and Mrs, Henry Berenger of Detroit, Michigan.
