Leonard Baxter, 87, Moneta, died Thursday, April 8, 1999, at St. Luke Lutheran Home, Spencer.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 12, 1999, at Warner Chapel, Spencer, with the Rev. Shurmaine McAlphine officiating.

Casket Bearers; Lane Muckey, David Saboe, Steven Saboe, Josh Muckey, Douglas Saboe and Richard Slawson.

Burial was at Lone Tree Cemetery, Everly, with Warner Funeral Home of Spencer in charge of arrangements.

Leonard Fred Baxter, the son of Solomon and Katherine (Yusten) Baxter, was born October 6, 1911, in Artesian, South Dakota and it was there he received his education. For several years, he worked as a farm hand before entering the service.

On June 22, 1942, Leonard entered the military and served with the Army Air Corps. He married Florence Mae Harvey Muckey on December 22, 1942 in Pueblo, Colorado. Following their marriage he continued to serve in the military where he was active in the China Air Offensive, Japan, India-Burma, Central Burma, South Philippines and the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was discharged on October 8, 1945, at Santa Ana, California.

Following his discharge, Leonard moved to Dawson, Minnesota and lived there for several years. Since 1951, he lived in Moneta where he owned the Moneta General Store, had been the town postmaster and also drove a school bus, retiring in 1978.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and infant daughter, Wanda; and 14 brothers and sister.

Leonard is survived by a son, Leonard and his wife, Janet of Boise, Idaho; three grandchildren; a step-daughter Rosie Saboe and her husband, Morris, of Moneta; three step-sones, Roy Muckey and his wife Barbara of Jacksonville, Oregon; Lloyd Muckey and his wife Phyllis of Watertown, South Dakota and Del Muckey and his wife Marcie of Spencer; s step-daughter-in-law, Lenora Muckey of Moneta; two sisters, Hazel Keegan of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Mina Smith of California
