March 26, 1927-October 8, 1987

Funeral Services for Donald Bates, 60, was held October 12, 1987 at 10:30 am at the Trinity United Church of Christ, Hartley. Rev. Jean Rosewall was in charge of the services.

He passed away at Des Moines on October 8, 1987.

Casket Bearers were Eddie Hilbert, Donald Frick, Denny Thomas, Mike Maranell, Bob Muilenberg and Jerry Erkes.

Donald Bates was born March 26,1927 at Spencer to Floyd and Frances (Smith) Bates. He atteded school at Moneta.

Mr. Bates enlisted in the US Navy, November 16, 1945, at Pearl Harbor, T.H. He served as a metalsmith on board the USS LaSalle and USS Hooper Island until his discharge November 8, 1947, at which time he joined the Naval Reserve until 1955.

He was united in marriage to Mardell Joens on March 25, 1949 at Jackson, Minnesota. They lived in the Spirit Lake area until 1951 when they moved to Everly. In 1964 the family moved to Spencer, and from thereto Hartley in 1973.

Donald had been a trucker his entire working life. His hobby was woodworking and he was a dedicated family man, especially enjoying his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Mardell; five daughters; Mrs. Don (Lenda) Olson of Spirit Lake, Mrs. Neil (Debbra) Ansley of Richmond, Texas, Mrs. Tom (Donna) Hargens of Ankeny, Mrs. Terry (Melody) Hilbert, Hartley and Shelly of Ankeny; one son and his wife; Duane and Shelly of Moneta; his mother; Mrs. Harold Yarns of Spirit Lake; nine grandchildren; two brothers; Dewey of Alamagordo, New Mexico and terry of St. Louis, Missouri, and two sisters; Diane (Mrs. Larry) Brown of Correctionville and Karen (Mrs. Ken) Halbur of Arnolds Park; other relatives and friends.

Committal service was in the Lone Tree Cemetery, Everly with the Baumgarten Funeral Home in charge.
