Leo Vernon "Pete" Austin
May 5, 1912-July 1986Funeral service for Leo Vernon "Pete" Austin, 74, of Spencer, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Calvary United Methodist Church, Arnolds Park.
Mr. Austin died Sunday at his home.
The Rev. John Poe and the Rev. Heber Miller will officiate at the services and burial will be at Lone Tree Cemetery, Everly, at 2 p.m.
Casket Bearers will be Noel Austin, Larry Wintz, Rich VanderWoude, William Wintz Jr., Adolph Vestergaard and Fred Christensen.
Honorary Bearers will be Larry Higinbotham, W. E. Berkler, Allison Nelson, Clarence Anderson, Jay Hammer and Merle Brown.
The son of Verna and Lydia (Klett) Austin, Mr. Austin was born May 5, 1912, in Round Lake, Minnesota. He grew up in the Everly and Spencer area and attended Westport Country School before graduating from Spencer High School in 1929.
He married Bertha May Davidson on June 17, 1942, in Dakota City, Nebraska. Following their marriage he served in the US Navy for three years.
After his discharge, Mr. Austin returned to Spencer, where he worked in an automobile parts store. He later owned Dairy Queens in Spencer and Arnolds Park and was active in their management for 13 years. He retired in 1971, but remained active with Dairy Queen.
Mr. Austin was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church, Arnolds Park, where he had served on the church board. He was also a member of the American Legion, Glen Pederson Post No.1 in Spencer. He enjoyed working with wood and refinishing antique furniture.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Survivors include his wife; and one sister, Ila Wintz of Milford.
Warner Funeral Home, Spencer, was in charge of the arrangements.
