Mary was born in her family farm home six miles west of Fostoria to George D. and Lila Heikens. She passed away in her home at Cedar Creek Senior Living in Madera, California, with her husband, Bill, by her side.

Mary received her early education in a one room country school near Fostoria. She graduated from Okoboji High School in 1944, attending college at both Le Mars College and Augsburg College in Minneapolis.

She was a skilled and creative seamstress and a dedicated farm wife who loved her family deeply. Mary cherished the times when they could all be together. She enjoyed farm life, especially in the fall when she helped with the harvest by hauling the grain to the elevators while Bill combined.

In retirement, Mary and Bill moved from their Greenville farm to their lake home in Wahpeton near Milford. Mary was always ready for a challenging game of cards with old or new friends, as well as walks about the canal areas in good weather while greeting neighbors.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her three brothers.

Left to cherish her memory are husband, Bill; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Jim Light of Manitou Springs, Colorado; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Bonnie Knight of Spencer, Iowa; daughter, Rhonda of Lake Oswego, Oregon; daughter, Sheryl of Milton Freewater, Oregon; daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Mike McGee of Chowchilla, California; son, Jeff of Denver, Colorado; and many grandchildren, step-grandchildren, and great grandchildren along with a host of relatives and friends.

The family wishes to thank Cedar Creek Retirement and St. Agnes Hospice for the kindness and caring services bestowed on Mary and the family.

A memorial service will be held in the Spring at First Lutheran Church of Milford.
