Mrs. Harriet Agnes McBride, a well known resident of Spencer, passed away Sunday, April 22, at the state hospital at Cherokee, Iowa, following a second stroke of paralysis on Thursday, April 19, and another the following day. She had been in poor health for a number of years, suffering with colitis. At the time of her death she was 51 years and 28 days old. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Dougherty of this city were called to Cherokee Friday and were with her at the time of her death.
Harriett Agnes Dougherty, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Dougherty of this city, was born at Oelwein, Iowa, July 26, 1876. She remained there until five years of age and then moved with her parents to Storm Lake, Iowa, where they lived for two years. Mr. and Mrs. Dougherty and daughter then moved to Early, Iowa, and lived for seven years and then moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Harriet Dougherty attended the Sisters school at Sioux Falls for three years. On July 11, 1894, Mr. and Mrs. Dougherty and daughter moved to Spencer, Iowa. She attended the grade schools and later took a business course.
She was in the newspaper business for almost twenty-eight years working before and after school hours and during the summer months for the Spencer Herald, Spencer, Iowa, which was at that time operated by Earl Bronson. The Herald was later sold to W.N. Bowman and she worked for a number of years for him. She worked at different times for the Spencer Reporter, covering a period of about eight years. She was also correspondent for the Sioux City Journal.
On December 25, 1919, Harriet Agnes Dougherty was united marriage to S.H. McBride, then a resident of this city. Following her marriage she went on a short trip but returned in April and resumed her work at the Reporter office, where she worked until about two years ago. At that time she was taken to the State hospital at Cherokee. Mrs. McBride returned to her home December 7, 1927, and visited with her parents until the following February but was then taken again to the State hospital.
Mrs. McBride was a very serious person and thoroughly enjoyed her newspaper work at which she was very competent. She had a very sweet disposition and was always willing to do what she was asked. Mrs. McBride will be sadly missed by her parents and friends. Besides her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Dougherty, Mrs. McBride is survived by a grandfather, B.W. Sanders of Independence, Iowa.
Funeral services were held this Wednesday morning April 25, at the Sacred Heart church of Spencer, and burial was made in the Riverside cemetery. Roy Frad, J.L. Burnais, Charles Maurer, Charles McGinnis, Thomas McKinetry and S. Kunath (?) were pall bearers.
