Estherville – Funeral services for Duane Russell Curry, 77, of Estherville will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 29 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville with Father Jerry Cosgrove officiating. Interment will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Estherville with military graveside rites by V.F.W. #3388, American Legion #91 and AMVETS #3391. He died on Sunday, May 25, 2003 at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville with a vigil service at 7 p.m.
Duane was born on March 8, 1926 in Spencer, the son of Ruben and Elizabeth (Heins) Curry. He received his education in the Spencer Schools. Duane then worked at Spencer Bottling Company until he enlisted into the United States Navy on May 4, 1944.
He served his boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Training Station then he was shipped to North Folk [Norfolk], Va. While he was in the Navy, he was assigned to the crew of the Amphibious Forces.
On May 45, 1947, he was united in marriage to Geraldine Margret Kunert at the Sacred Heart Church in Spencer. After their marriage the couple worked on several farms. Later in life, Duane worked for L & H Grain in Dolliver for 13 years. He also worked for Bill Eich of Spirit Lake.
He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Duane is survived by his wife, Geraldine of Estherville; one son, Tom and his wife Marj of Ringsted; one daughter, Sandy Thomas of Estherville; three grandchildren, Arlene, Chris, Shawn; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Fisher and friend, Bill, of Spirit Lake and Mareen Mason of Spencer; one brother, Darrell “Buzz” Curry and his wife, Lou of Spencer.
He has been preceded in death by one son, William Duane and his parents. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 29, 2003)
