Called to His Reward

Adam Emig was born in York, Pa., August 1, 1836, and died in Spencer, Iowa, April 4, 1911, at 12 o'clock noon.

In his young manhood he learned the blacksmith trade and worked at it for many years. He was married and had one daughter, Mrs. Charles Raffensparger, who died several years ago. His wife died ten years ago and since that time he made his home at G. W. Anderson's. He came to Clay county with the Bender family in 1882. For nineteen years he cared for the First National Bank building as janitor.

Two years ago after the Lyon meetings he united, with the M. E. church of Spencer and his faithfulness was an inspiration to all with whom he came in contact.

Adam had been in failing health for the past two years. About two or three months ago he went to Biloxi, Miss., where a number of Spencer people were spending the winter, but he was gradually nearing the end and it came very shortly after his return to Spencer.

Such are a few of the bald facts usually making the major part of the obituary notice.

But Adam Emig's life was one long story of the cheeriest optimism and God only knows the hope his kindly greetings have sent into the hearts of all he met. His numberless little acts of kindness growing out of his real goodness of heart and his desire to contribute to the happiness and comfort of all he met endeared him to everyone. No one could be long a resident of Spencer without making the acquaintance of Adam Emig for he ever had a kindly greeting for all without regard to race, color or creed and no one will be more missed than he, and we don't know of a person in Spencer young or old who would not have considered it a privilege to have been permitted to do a kindness for Adam but he had a sturdy self respect which always kept him free and independent. He has gone to his reward but the memory of his life will long linger in the hearts of all who knew him.

The funeral will be held at the M.E. church tomorrow at two o'clock.
